Prof Lap-Chee Tsui, Founding President of The Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, was honoured with the “2019 Lifetime Achievement Award in Genetics” by The Association of Chinese Geneticists in America on 17 Oct 2019.

Prof Tsui is a world renowned geneticist noted for his landmark identification and cloning of the cystic fibrosis gene in 1989.  In a citation delivery on the presentation ceremony, Prof Paul Wong quoted a 1989 bulletin which pointed out that “He was the first one to obtain a linked DNA probe to the CF locus [in 1985], and it is indeed, wonderful to see him emerged as the victor in the cloning of the CF gene amidst global cut-throat competition”.  To recognise his breakthrough achievement, Prof Tsui became internationally known as “the father of the CF gene”.  He has also made significant contributions to the study of the human genome, especially the characterization of chromosome 7.

Prof Wong further pointed out that Prof Tsui had important contribution to higher education.  He was appointed the Vice Chancellor of The University of Hong Kong in 2002 and helped the University to attain an international reputation.  When he was retired in 2014, the University was ranked number 21 in the world.
