ASHK’s Response to Chief Executive’s Policy Address

The Hong Kong Academy of Sciences welcomes the Government devotes more resources to the development of science and technology in the 2020 Policy Address.

Prof. Lap-Chee TSUI, Founding President of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, said that science and technology innovation has been the top agenda in the 14th Five-Year Plan. Hong Kong has tremendous strengths in its university research system. The additional investment proposed by the Chief Executive would clearly strengthen Hong Kong’s leadership role in developing itself into a centre of excellence in science and technology.

Prof. Vic Kam Tuen LAW, Founding President of the Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences, also welcomes the Government's plan to invest $2 billion in a five-year "Global STEM Professorship Scheme" to work with local universities in recruiting outstanding scientific researchers and their teams to settle in Hong Kong. Prof. LAW pointed out that in the past local universities did not have sufficient resources to set up an attractive start-up fund for top-notch overseas researchers to set up laboratories to carry out scientific research in Hong Kong. This shortcoming has indirectly affected the   development of science and technology in Hong Kong. He believes that the new initiative could facilitate local universities to attract international science and technology talents.
